How your child learns to plan their day independently

How your child learns to plan their day independently

Independence starts with understanding what's going to happen. For children who need extra structure, visual day planning is the key to more autonomy, without pressure or stress.

Step 1: Start together

Plan the first few days together with your child. Open daylumi, choose pictograms from the library and discuss what each activity means. By involving your child in planning, you create ownership of the day.

Step 2: Let your child check off

Once the plan is set, hand over the tablet or phone to your child. In child mode, your child only sees activities with large, clear pictograms. They tap each activity when done. You track progress remotely.

Step 3: Build routine

After a week, children recognize the pattern. The morning routine becomes second nature, the day plan provides structure. Use templates in daylumi to save recurring day plans (school day, Wednesday afternoon, weekend).

Step 4: Build trust

As your child becomes more skilled, let them co-decide on the order or activities. In daylumi they can (in parent mode) add pictograms themselves. This strengthens their sense of control and competence.

The result: less stress, more confidence

Parents report fewer conflicts over daily tasks after just 2-3 weeks. Children feel calmer because they know what's coming. And best of all: they're proud of themselves when all steps are checked off.
